Since 1976, Safe Connections has created hope and healing from pain and violence.

Tuesday, February 9
Come and join us for a timely and informative lecture by Alvin Edgell on "The Puzzle of Afghanistan”. 10:45 AM at the Ethical Society, 9001Clayton Rd.  The lecture will be followed by questions and discussion. Edgell has served as acting director of the Peace Corps in Afghanistan for 3 years. Wednesday, February10
Washington University Assembly Series presents Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Edward Larson in the Thomas Hall Lecture at 4 p.m., location to be determined. The talk is titled "From Dayton to Dover : A Brief History of the Evolution Teaching Controversy in the U.S. " Larson's books, which mainly deal with evolution and the current and historical conflicts between science and religion, are regarded as both scholarly and highly readable for the general population. "Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Monkey Trial and America 's Continuing Debate over Science and Religion" won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in history.  Creve Coeur Township Democratic Club presents a brief presentation by Mr. Clay followed by  a lively Q. & A. session.  It will be held at Club City Place Number One Auditorium, in downtown Creve Coeur. Immediately north of Olive along N New Ballas Rd.   (The 2nd signalized inter-section east of 270 and Olive.)  Refreshments at 7:00 PM; program at 7:30 PM.

Faith Aloud is collaborating with NARAL Prochoice Missouri, the Planned Parenthood affiliates of Missouri, and other groups concerned with reproductive justice to hold three pro-choice mini-Lobby Days in 2010. The first one is at the capitol from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be led by Faith Aloud.  We're calling it "Faithful Choices" Lobby Day.  Transportation is on your own, or if you're in St. Louis you can meet up to carpool at 7:30 a.m.  We'll send you the location when you register.

For nearly half a century, Steinem has been at the forefront of the women's rights movement in America . Her influence on American culture has been far-reaching and included the creation of "Ms. Magazine" and Take Your Daughter to Work Day.

former Washington Bureau Chief of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Supreme Court specialist,
now director of Southern Illinois University Carbondale's School of Journalism

He will discuss the Supreme Court, with special emphasis on the recent Citizens United decision, allowing corporations to give treasury funds for the election of a political candidate.  Title of his presentation: The Supreme Court and Hillary the Movie. Mr. Freivogel is the Director and an Associate Professor at the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Visiting Professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
